I had the opportunity to shoot in Alaska twice this year: once in July (light all day) and again in January (barely any light). But one beautiful thing about winter in Alaska is that golden hour lasts for almost the entirety of the time there’s daylight, and it was during this January trip that Megan and Matt and I got to take advantage of that for their couples session at Eklutna Lake right in Anchorage. It was absolutely frigid and breaks to get the feeling back into our hands were necessary, but the crisp Alaska air, the creative race to make the most of the fading golden light, and these two being total troopers made this shoot so memorable. Despite the cold temps, we even managed to sneak a couple of photos with their cutie daughter, Brooklyn.
The following day, I shot with Amber, Billy, and Declan at the airport in Eagle River. This shoot was in the morning, but since sunrise is actually around 10 am in the winter in Alaska, we got this gorgeous pink light. Billy is a pilot so we decided to do something a little different this year and focus their family session not just on the backdrop of Alaska, but also on something they love doing together: flying and exploring in their little airplane! Amber and Billy are two of my closest friends and in addition to adventuring together as much as possible all over the country, we also shoot together at least twice a year. I’ve really loved documenting them and their relationship, and eventually their little family once Declan was born. We’ve shot together everywhere from Virginia to New York to Oklahoma, and now, Alaska!
