A Hygge-Inspired Vermont Wedding

Emily and Jeff’s hygge-inspired Vermont wedding was everything that we appreciate in a celebration: authentically joyful, carefree, and a fabulously good time. If their light-hearted beachside engagement session was any indication, I knew these two would truly stay in the moment on their wedding day.

Emily and Jeff brought together their love of Vermont, skiing, and adventure when they chose their venue: Killington’s K1 Lodge. Nestled in the Green Mountains, their celebration seamlessly blended the natural beauty of the season with perfectly selected hygge-inspired wedding details. Feathery floral arrangements, a rich fall palette, and cozy candlelight completed Emily’s hygge dream of a warm and inviting atmosphere. And of course, it wouldn’t be a proper New England wedding without a full raw bar (complete with a whole octopus!) and bottles of locally-made maple syrup at each place setting. An illuminated bar sign was another individual touch that really helped transform what is typically a ski lodge into a wedding-ready space.

As dinner and toasts wrapped up and the wedding party was about to be announced, a surprise awaited guests when Jeff took to the mic and stepped into the role of master of ceremonies instead of DJ Matty P. Jeff’s hilarious commentary and well-timed jokes set the tone for an incredibly unique reception that blew away not just their guests but all of us, as well. I’ve never experienced this particular touch at a wedding, but it’s now on my list of favorite wedding moments.

One of the things I really appreciate about the couples I get to work with is their willingness to be adventurous and try anything. The entire day had been rainy and though we worked with the wind and rain to produce some gorgeous portraits, almost everything, including the ceremony, was moved indoors. Shortly before leaving, we noticed it was still pouring outside and saw an opportunity. We snuck Emily and Jeff away from their party and into the rain, and though we initially tried to quickly get our shots and get them back inside, I noticed at one point that they were entirely in the moment, as if the camera wasn’t even there at all. They were literally dancing in the rain, and seeing that just made me want to dance right along with them.

As we wrapped up our rainy session, Emily and Jeff returned to the warmth inside to continue the celebration, complete with a sweet touch of Vermont – indulging in a scoop or two of Ben & Jerry’s ice cream.
