Tess and Tyler’s intimate autumn wedding at Mass MoCA was a celebration like no other. Nestled amidst the scenic beauty of the Berkshires in Western Massachusetts, Mass MoCA was a unique backdrop for their intimate and classy wedding. Having worked at the museum during her college days, Tess was excited to be exchanging vows and celebrating within the sprawling 19th century factory complex. From intriguing industrial spaces to the vibrant art installations, we were thrilled to explore and capture the essence of such a historic and distinct venue.
The heart of the celebration unfolded in a breathtaking 80-foot-long gallery adorned with Spencer Finch’s mesmerizing light-based work, “Cosmic Latte.” With more than 150 LED fixtures suspended from the ceiling, arranged to mimic the Milky Way as seen from the Northern Hemisphere, the space was truly magical. It was here that Tess and Tyler shared their sweet first look, a moment filled with anticipation and tender affection underneath the glowing lights. When Tess and Tyler gave us a sneak peek of the space the day before their wedding, we couldn’t wait to explore it all with them the next day; putting them into the space completely illuminated it even more.
After their first look, we were able to devote some time to portraits throughout the rest of the Mass MoCA. The variety of installations and art made for multiple visually striking backgrounds and a new way to think about portraiture, and we had so much fun thinking our way through it and collaborating with Tess and Tyler. We also took advantage of the architectural elements of the former 19th-century mill, incorporating the industrial feel of steel beams, original brick structures, and expansive rectangular windows into the backdrop. This space is beloved by Tess and Tyler, and we wanted to make sure their photos reflect both the museum’s rich history and ambiance, and their own story. There were so many interesting spaces to explore and I’m excited for another opportunity to shoot here!
Throughout the day, heartfelt moments unfolded left and right. As Tess walked down the aisle, arm in arm with her father, tears welled up in his eyes and hers. Seeing these genuine moments of tenderness makes me well up with gratitude to do the job we do; to be present to witness and capture some of the most significant moments of peoples’ lives. Tyler’s best friend, Matt, delivered a toast that had guests roaring with laughter when he whipped out a 5 foot long scroll at the beginning of his speech. Matt highlighted the couple’s shared humor, camaraderie, and love for each other with a depth that truly cemented not just the strength of Tess and Tyler’s relationship, but the tight friendships they’ve built together.
The evening culminated with Tess and Tyler on the dance floor, surrounded by all their people. Underneath the shimmering lights of suspended disco balls, it felt like nearly every single guest was up and dancing. Right before wrapping up, we grabbed Tess and Tyler for one final shot. Using the empty window frames, one flash and the warm glow of red and gold lights illuminating the galleries, we framed Tess and Tyler within them. This last shot was such a memorable conclusion to our time with them and the perfect ending to an exciting, adventure-filled 2023 wedding season.
