There are some places that just feel like a dream and Cat and Brian’s coastal engagement session was definitely set in one of them. I found myself standing in the backyard of Brian’s longtime family home in Gloucester, Massachusetts, looking out at the water thinking, “This feels like paradise.” It felt like the kind of place where you’d want to post up in a hammock with a good book in one hand and a cup of coffee (or a glass of wine, if that’s your persuasion) in the other just soaking in the ocean and letting the breeze roll over you.
It wasn’t just the view that made the evening feel special. It was Cat and Brian being themselves, a relaxed and playful couple enjoying every moment together.

From the moment I arrived, I could feel how much this place means to them. It’s more than a family home – it’s a part of their story. They introduced me to a few family members, shared stories about the history of the house, and, best of all, brought along their adorable wiener dog Mitzi, who may or may not have stolen the spotlight more than once. (Honestly, she was made for the camera. A total natural.)
Cat and Brian had the kind of energy that made photographing them pure fun. We laughed a lot, especially when they climbed onto a backyard tree swing. There’s a black and white frame of Cat mid-laugh on that swing that I keep coming back to. It’s unforced. She embodies that carefree, summer-on-the-coast kind of vibe.
As the sun began to dip lower, we all hopped onto their little Whaler and motored out to a stretch of beach that felt like our own private hideaway. The kind of untouched shoreline you dream about when you think of New England in the summertime. No crowds, no noise, just the sea, the sky, two people and obviously Mitzi.
Cat and Brian laid down a blanket in the sand, popped some bubbly, and settled in. They watched the waves roll in and soaked up that golden July light. The whole session had that slow, warm sun-drenched feeling; the kind of summer evening you wish could last a little longer.
This shoot wasn’t about posing or perfection. It was about two people who clearly love each other and their life together. Cat brought a relaxed, carefree energy that made everything feel spontaneous and real. She and Brian were totally at ease, and that made every photo feel effortless.
These are the sessions I live for. When a place, a couple, and a moment align in the most natural way. Where the photos become more than portraits, they become memories. I’m already counting the days until their wedding next year. If this evening was any hint of what’s to come, it’s going to be something very special. Cat and Brian, thank you for sharing this little piece of your world with me.
