A New England Wedding with a New Orleans Flair

Katharine and Nate’s New England wedding had a jazzy New Orleans flair, blending their love of Portsmouth, NH with the style, music, and feel of The Big Easy. It was evident that they were committed to infusing their wedding with personal touches that ensured that they and their guests had a truly unique wedding experience.

During their engagement session on the rooftop patio of their Boston apartment two months earlier, they mentioned a fun top-secret decor plan: they had amassed 96 bottles of champagne to repurpose for something that I wouldn’t know about until I saw it myself: these seemingly ordinary wires would soon be transformed into a 3D seating chart, adorned with the name of each one of their guests as well as a table number.

Katharine and Nate’s ceremony and reception took place in the heart of the always charming coastal city of Portsmouth, NH. From the historic brick sidewalks where we photographed their first look, to the classical revival architecture of the South Church, and finally culminating at the iconic Jimmy’s Jazz and Blues Club – they truly incorporated some of my favorite parts of this city.

Katharine’s bridesmaids looked effortlessly chic in all-black gowns and the groomsmen cleaned up nicely in their black suits. Nate and his groomsmen looked sharp in tailored tuxedos. Luckily for Nate, who was struggling with his bow tie, his soon-to-be wife stepped in to put on the finishing touches, leading to a sweet and funny moment for those of us who were observing!

Katharine stunned in not just one but two gowns that exuded absolute grace and sophistication. Her first dress was a floor length gown with multiple layers of gossamer white fabric. Paired with a classic chignon, it perfectly complemented her ceremony dress and her 1920s flapper-inspired reception dress.

Katharine’s grandfather, a retired judge, officiated their ceremony within South Church, and a family friend wrote and performed an original piece of piano music for the couple. After saying “I do,” the newlyweds and their guests took a leisurely stroll through the streets of Portsmouth, accompanied by the soulful melodies of a live saxophone player. It was a magical procession that captured the celebratory mood and New Orleans vibe that Katharine and Nate had envisioned.

The reception, held inside Jimmy’s Jazz and Blues Club, was warm and personal, with a speakeasy vibe. As the evening unfolded, guests were treated to a heartwarming and humorous toast from the best man and maid of honor, leaving everyone in stitches. The dance floor was packed from the first song to the last, with friends and family coming together to celebrate Katharine and Nate. Adding to the electric atmosphere was the soulful sound of the live seven-piece band, Boston Renditions, whose music kept the energy high and spirits soaring throughout the night.
